Loneliness In Short Stories - 712 Words
Loneliness In Short Stories These short stories of ââ¬Å"A Rose for Emily,â⬠ââ¬Å"A Clean Well-Lighted Place,â⬠and ââ¬Å"Miss Brill,â⬠shows the main characters being lonely and doing things that people donââ¬â¢t see very often unless itââ¬â¢s on the news. After hearing of the main charactersââ¬â¢ back story, The reader can infer that the reason the character is in such dismay is because of everything they went through. Therefore, these lonely people do things that makes the reader believe that they are insane. The theme of loneliness and alienation is shown in ââ¬Å"A Rose for Emily,â⬠ââ¬Å"In a Clean Well-Lighted Place,â⬠and ââ¬Å"Miss Brillâ⬠. First, in ââ¬Å"A Rose for Emilyâ⬠, Mrs. Emily is seen as a lonely old women, whose loneliness started at a young age. The young waiter is shown as a naive man who doesnââ¬â¢t really care about anything. He only cares about himself and doesnââ¬â¢t consider anyone else, ââ¬Å"Heââ¬â¢ll stay all night, he said to his college. Iââ¬â¢m sleepy now. I never get into bed before three oââ¬â¢clock. He should have killed himself last weekâ⬠(paragraph 16). While the old waiter knows what it feels like to be lonely. He told the young waiter, ââ¬Å"You do not understand. This is a clean and pleasant cafe. It is well lighted. The light is very good and also, now, there are shadows of the leavesâ⬠(paragraph 74). Lastly, in the short story, ââ¬Å"Miss Brill,â⬠she is portrayed a lonely spinster. A spinster is a unmarried women who spends her time teaching children and reading news papers. Her weekly visits to the park shows that she is lonely. She searches for anyone who will have a conversation with her. Lonely people often times talk to themselves or to o bjects; and, the only conversation Miss Brill has is with her fur coat that she is wearing. Which shows she is not a part of the community and that she is lonely. CONCLUSION The theme of loneliness and alienation is shown in ââ¬Å"Miss Brill,â⬠ââ¬Å"A Clean and Well-Lighted Place,â⬠and ââ¬Å"A Rose for Emilyâ⬠.
